Marshall Road Roller No 88097
Marshall Road Roller (88097) has been undergoing some minor maintenance work along with the fitting of rubber tyres to the wheels. There are a number of Rollers further afield that have had this sort of tyre fitted, but it is the first roller in Cornwall to have had them. An excellent job has been done, and it’s only on closer inspection that you realise that they are rubber and not steel. There’s no doubt this will be one of the quietest Rollers in the County from now on and we look forward to an update as to what it’s like out on the road.

Events to be held at Redruth Rugby Club at 7.30pm

2009 Road Run
5th April 2009
After much worrying about the weather, the day turned out to be beautifully sunny. We all gathered at Mount Hawke by kind permission of Graham and Rita Carylon who kindly let us use their yard. Our planned route would take in the famous engine hill, Mingoose, St Agnes and the beacon and then onto Perranporth for a half hour stop at Riley Garage to collect donations for the charities. We collected money on behalf of the WESES charity Sightsavers International and also a local charity, Handstand which is the appeal set up for a local toddler who has recently lost both hands and both feet to meningitis. We would then travel back through Perrancoombe and Mithian and Mount Hawke again to the Victory Inn at Towan Cross for lunch.
By around 9.45 we had a nice collection of vehicles assembling for the 10am kick off. It soon became apparent though when Robbie Richards arrived with his immaculate Scammel and Chris Vincent and family and Jacob arrived with their large ERF tractor unit that parts of the run would be tight to say the least! So it was decided that Simon Tokin would take charge of the commercial vehicles and alter the route to suit. We had a good turn out from the commercial section with Rex and Marilyn Curtis in Rex’ Bedford lorry, Chris Vincent also bought along his Austin expertly driven by Henry and dog. Morley beard bought along his AEC and Simon Tonkin came along in Graham Carlyon’s Thames Trader.
The vintage car section was represented by some fine and unusual examples we had Brian in his early 1900s Standard Kenilworth car, which has no water pump fitted but faired well on the run and didn’t over heat! Frank White came along with his 1970 MG Midget and we also had a 1967 Moss kit car belonging to Pete Burrows. Tracey Beard came along in her lovely 1972 Daimler Sovereign. Owing to running problems Chrissy Bramfield met us as the Victory Inn instead of accompanying us enroute. Graham and Rita Carlyon joined us in their Ford Escort.
We had a first time road runner in the shape of Sarah Ely who bought along her BSA motorbike.
The tractor section was very well supported and we had a total of 17 tractors. We bought along our recently restored Nuffield DM4 complete with discreet advertising board and flags! Peter Phillips joined us on his E27N P6. Leonard Thomas and his grandson joined us all the way from Leedstown on a pair of very big and loud John Deere tractors recently imported from USA. Steve Penrose and his mate Rodney Johns came along from Blackwater on two of Steve’s International B250 tractors. We had a 1978 Ford 4600 in working clothes driven by Paul Honeychurch with his dog as navigator. Regular ‘road runners’ father and son Malcolm and John Penrose joined us from the Lanner area with their Nuffield and MF35 tractors complete with people carrier and transport box for the rest of the family and friends. From the same area we also had Ted Coote another regular road runner with his TED20. Clifford and Diane from Diane’s Flowers in Mount Hawke supported us by bringing along a 6 cylinder Fordson Major. John Jose and Jenny Thomas arrived in style on John’s unusual David Brown. Keith Hawkey joined us from the Goonhavern area on his lovely looking MF35. A new road runner for the tractor section was John Ely on his Fordson Major E1A. And last but not least we were joined by Donald Thomas from Mount Hawke on his David Brown 880.
We were joined at Perranporth by two local Perranporth residents, John Luke came on his recently restored E27N petrol TVO model and Sandy came on his TE20.
We had a great reception when we arrived at Riley Garage in Perranporth, the lorries and cars arrived before us having taken a different route and being faster on the road. The photographer from the West Briton was on hand to take pictures for the paper for the Handstand page and it was really nice to see Marshall’s dad, Moss had come along to see us all. We were really pleased at the turn out in Perranporth, more than we had hoped for.
So after our stop at Riley garage we departed again for the homeward journey and for lunch. Again the lorries took another route to avoid any narrow roads.
The day didn’t pass entirely without any breakdowns! One tractor didn’t want to start on leaving Riley garage (Thanks to Steve Penrose for a tow), one tractor ran out of petrol on the zebra crossing in the middle of Perranporth! And another conked out going back thorough Perran Coombe and had to be towed by one of the large John Deere tractors. To save any red faces we’ve not named you but you know who you are!! Apart from that the day passed without incident, the roads were quiet and all motorists courteous. We even had a display of the Air Ambulance taking off whilst travelling through Mingoose. We all arrived safely at the Victory Inn at Towan cross on time for a well earned lunch.
We would like to thank all that turned out to support us and for donating so generously to the charities. We raised a total of £255. Due to the success of this, our first road run we hope to make this an annual event. Apologies to those whose picture we didn’t manage to get, but it got a bit hectic at times trying to speak to you all and sort things. If anyone has any suggestions or comments or would like to come on next years run please get in contact with the tractor secretary Peter Knight or on 01872 561665. Thanks again for support and for making all the hard work we put into this road run worth while!
Peter and Caroline Knight.

Registration No. DW4737

Firstly our sincere thanks to Scott Yeo for allowing us to access and record this restoration.
After finishing in commercial service, this road roller was placed in the children’s play area in Princess Street Park (Park-y-Werin) in Gorseinon, Swansea, South Wales (date unknown). It languished there for many years and with its ‘royalty plate’ missing identifying the roller proved difficult. Thanks to the late Alan Duke’s records, on behalf of the Road Locomotive Society, the number 48 on the headstock revealed it to be No. 11439. This was one of many rollers in the Richards Road Rolling Company fleet.
Purchased via private tender from Swansea C.C. (and stored in Rees Metals Ltd scrapyard) by Mr Philip Manison in June 2000, the roller was later offered for sale in ‘Old Glory’ magazine (issue 127) in Spetember 2000. The roller was sold to Mr Clive Armstrong of Cornwall who intended a full restoration in February 2001. However, the roller was later sold to Mr Mark de Barr, also of Cornwall, later that month. At this time the roller was still in the scrapyard near Swansea so Mark and his crew transported it to Cornwall on 3rd March 2001.
Mr Scott Yeo of Cornwall purchased the roller at auction in October 2007, and the roller was transported to his workshop in Ponsanooth by R H Richards.
Restoration work began by removing the motion and the crank. The tubes were also cut out and the boiler cleaned and prepared for inspection by the boiler inspector. The fire box was found to have minimal wastage. The fire box stays, the tube plate and a section of the front of the barrel will require replacing. Mr Yeo has also purchased two injectors and two tender valve castings.
